The Sun in H-alpha light today. With a Coronado Solarmax II, 60, BF15 H-alpha scope mounted on a Skywatcher Solar Quest solar finding and tracking mount. Captured with AstroDMx Capture and an Altair 678M camera. A 2000 frame 16 bit SER file was captured by AstroDMx Capture. The best 50% of the frames were stacked in Autostakkert! 4, and processed in waveSharp 3, PI, and Gimp 3.

As a follow up to a recent talk given by Stuart Hemsley-Rice on the Penllergare Equatorial Observatory, a group of SAS Members enjoyed a visit there hosted by Stuart who escorted four groups around inside this historic observatory. Several solar scopes were also taken to site for some solar viewing and imaging with several passers by also able to enjoy some fine views through these specialised scopes.
White light solar:
A stack of 85% of 43 frames taken with a Dwarf Mini smart scope outside the Penllergare Equatorial Observatory using a solar filter to show a white light image of the sun with several active regions and sunspots visible on its surface. The images were pre processed in PIP, stacked in Autostakkert!4, wavelet processed in Registax and further processed in Pixinsight's solar toolbox and Adobe Photoshop to orient the disc correctly.

On the night of the 24th May, members enjoyed some semi tropical conditions at the observatory for some viewing, imaging and social, with some great shared learnings undertaken. Members brought along their scopes and cameras, including two smart scopes to images the moon and various DSO's. It was nice to sit out under the heavens and enjoy the celestial delights on offer, including views of Mercury, Venus and Jupiter, with some great closeup views of the moon's terminator and two of Jupiter's moons being occulted by the planet with the great red spot also central at the same time. Some fine images were taken of the Moon, the Veil and Elephants Trunk nebula, several galaxies and more through a range of scopes at various focal lengths .

Arp 296 is another pair of interacting galaxies above ARP 299 in this image, notable for long, faint tidal filaments. Arp 296 lies much further away, about 800 million light-years. It consists of a primary barred spiral galaxy (PGC 35345) and a fainter companion (PGC 2580146).

NGC3184 (Little Pinwheel): I shot another 1.5 hrs of RGB/Ha on this galaxy with my Sky Watcher Esprit 80 and ASI 533MM Pro camera and EFW, bringing the total integration time to 6.75 hrs. The image was cropped twice and upscaled to show the main attraction more clearly.
Moon with a Dwarf Mini 26/5/26: 36 subs processed in PIPP, stacked in Autostakkert!4 and wavelet processed in Registax, with further adjustments made in Pixinsight and Adobe Lightroom.
The Crescent nebula (Caldwell 27): Just 50 mins of 60s subs taken with the Dwarf Mini set up in EQ mode using its built in Duo band filter. The images were integrated and processed in Pixinsight and Adobe Lightroom.

Elephant's Trunk nebula (IC 1396A) SHO/HOO blends: Imaged at the members viewing evening of the 24th May 2026; 2 hours 35 minutes of SHO data captured on IC1396 using a Sky Watcher Esprit 80 and ASI 533MM Pro camera and EFW. As well as making the SHO composition, I made two HOO versions and did a blend of all three using the “Combine image” script; adjusting percent and intensity of each image, to produce and SHO/HOO and HOO with NBN Mode 3 mix.

Ring nebula (M57): An experiment to compare a conventional telescope rig set up using a long narrowband imaging run (30 x 5 min subs) with a short run on a smart scope with its internal Duo band filter on a small planetary nebula M57. I shot 2.5 hours of SHO with the SW Esprit 80 and ASI 533MM camera and EFW and just 7 x 60s subs with the Dwarf Mini smart scope. All Fits files were stacked and edited in Pixinsight & LR to give native FOV and cropped images. Despite the unfair comparison in imaging time, the smart scope gave very respectable results for such a short data set.

The Sun was taken on the 24th, 25th and 26 of May in Hydrogen alpha. The 24th of May also included an inverted image which I normally use but I have been preferring the "standard" image. These were captured using my Acuter Phoenix Elite and Player One Neptune M. 4000 frames each and stacked in Autostakkert! and processed in PixInsight using the Solar toolbox.

I am still enjoying the Sky Watcher HAC125DX Honders scope that I purchased last autumn. With the addition of the autofocus kit it is now easier to achieve accurate focus. Starizona, the makers of the Hyperstar kits for Celestron RASA scopes, have released a filter and camera mount for the HAC125DX so that it can take advantage of Duo Band imaging at f/2 speeds. I had my first light with this system last night.
To fit the filter holder I needed to remove a screw in M42 ring. This took two days and a couple of belt wrenches and WD-40 Specialist penetrating oil!! I was not happy.
The kit has a mounting holder for the filter that screws into the telescope and two camera holders for various types of M42 cameras. Small sensor cameras such as the IMX533 and IMX585 are suitable. The filter holder has three grub screws to hold the camera holder in the filter ring and this is a huge improvement on the single thumbscrew the scope is provided with. The camera angle is easy to adjust without introducing tilt. I will leave the filter mount on permanently, and remove the filter when shooting RGB.

Filter Choice
With a fast f/2 imaging scope the normal Duo Band filters cannot be used as the angle of the light rays causes a shift in the filters bandpass. With the popularity of Celestron RASA scopes the filter manufacturers are now making dedicated f/2 Duoband filters. I chose the Optolong L-Extreme f2 2” filter as it has good reviews and was a more reasonable price than others.
The scope is still producing elongated stars in the corners. BlurXterminator solves this issue and for the prices of the scope against the complexity of the optics it is acceptable. A Celestron RASA6” would be a better choice but at 3x the cost! The HAC125DX scope; filter holder, filter, Autofocus kit and auto focuser plus an SVBony SV605CC cooled IMX533 colour camera and BlurX are about the same price as a RASA 6” #
Results
One of the main purposes of this scope is to collect data in less time that my f/5 or f/8 refractors. Given the short nights at this time of year I would not usually attempt narrowband imaging as i like to collect a minimum of nine hours data, three in each channel. In theory the f/2 scope is five times faster than an f/5 scope so one night should provide sufficient data.
On the night of 24-25th May 2026 i collected 47x3 min sub frames giving a total integration time of 141 mins.
The sub frames were processed in Pixinsight WBPP with flats, darks and bias frames. Flat frames are a must as the scope does show significant vignetting with the IMX183c sensor. The stacked image was processed in Pixinsight using DBE; BlurXterminator; Noise Exterminator and Background Extraction. The Master Linear image was then handed to Narrowband Normalisation, that is part of the Pixinsight Colour Calibration process controls. The resulting image was stretched in MAS (Multiscale Adaptive Stretch) and further processed with Curves and Local Histogram Equalisation.

Final Image
Overall I am very happy with the process of shooting and processing with a Duo Band Filter. It adds another dimension to this little scope and allows me to maximise the dark clear skies that I get here in Pembroke. This development of Duo Band filters is a boon to those with colour cameras and RASA type scopes.
