Some seven members enjoyed a good night/ morning on the 11th/12th August for observing the peak of this year’s annual Perseid meteor display at the Brian Stokes Cygnus Observatory. The warm weather made for some pleasant viewing conditions, with members using deck chairs to sit out and watch the show. Although the almost full moon washed out many of the fainter meteors, there were some bright ones observed, of which just three were recorded on camera. As well as the meteors, members were able to use a variety of telescopes and binoculars to enjoy some fine views of Saturn, Jupiter, the Moon plus several double stars, clusters and other objects.

Yet another clear night with temperatures just under 20° made for some pleasurable viewing and imaging, and with the peak of the Perseids due shortly this was a good opportunity for some meteor spotting too, however they seemed to be in short supply! Jupiter and Saturn looked amazing though! Due to the almost full moon I used the narrowband filter for imaging, turning my attention to the Wizard and Heart nebulae and managed 2 hours total exposure on the Wizard nebula and just over one hour on the Heart nebula.

NGC 7380 (The Wizard nebula) – 2 hours total exposure imaged in narrowband using an Optolong L-eNhance filter. This lovely cluster of stars surrounded by a striking red emission nebula is located in Cepheus and is some 8,500 ly away.
The Wizard nebula
IC1805 (The Heart nebula) – 1 hour and 6 minutes total exposure with an Optolong L-eNhance filter. Due to the huge size of this object (over 2° of sky) I could only get a small part of it in the FOV. At least this makes it look respectable though, as rather than a heart, I think the whole thing resembles another part of the anatomy! I guess this target is best done using an SLR, so I might give that a go next time. The Heart Nebula is some 7,500 ly away and is located in Cassiopeia. There are some lovely dark dust lanes that come out in this image.

Another great night, so I went after the "Garnet Star" and nebula in Cepheus within IC1396 and also took some more data of the nearby Elephant's Trunk nebula and star clusters. I managed to integrate these data into a mosaic with other data I had taken in this region recently to give around 4.25 hours total exposure. I also added another hour and 20 mins to the Helix nebula which when combined with the earlier data gave just over 4 hours worth exposure which has brought out more detail including the more tenuous rear shell of gas. I processed one in mono to show this more clearly.
I find these to be fascinating objects, with the Garnet Star (mu Cephei) being particularly striking; even in unstretched data. I guess its not surprising when you consider this is one of the more massive hypergiant stars being some 10,000 times brighter than our own sun and large enough to engulf the orbit of Jupiter if it were located at our sun's centre. The fringed dark tongues of nebulosity of IC1396 appear to be backlit by fluorescing gases and make for an impressive sight which draws me in to discovering more of our Milky Way galaxies' secrets. As for the Helix nebula in Aquarius; its colours are exquisite, making it a joy to image what is considered to be our closest Planetary nebula to us; located just 650 ly away.
