M3 globular cluster

Using AstroDMx Capture for Linux to capture 90s FITS files with matching dark frames. The scope was an 80mm ED Apochromatic triplet with a field flattener mounted on an AVX mount, and the camera was an Atik 314E OSC CCD camera.

Unfortunately, only 5 usable frames were captured due to clouds moving in.

The images were stacked in Siril and post processed in the Gimp 2.10 and Neat Image.

The Sun in white light with a bridge camera

A Panasonic Lumix DMCFZ72, 60x optical zoom bridge camera fitted with a Baader solar filter and mounted on a static tripod was used to capture 132 images of the Sun. The images were precisely cropped in Nicola's AstroCrop, registered, the images stacked and wavelet processed in Siril. The final image was post processed in the Gimp 2.10.

Swan nebula, field flattener and an SV405CC OSC camera

Testing a field flattener with our 80mm Apo triplet refractor and an SV405CC OSC camera mounted on a Celestron AVX mount. Unguided 90s FITS data plus matching dark frames captured with AstroDMx Capture for Linux on M17, the Swan nebula and surrounding star field, stacked with Siril and post processed in the Gimp 2.10.

The stars are round to the edge of the field of view so the field flattener worked well.

M3, field flattener, Apo refractor and satellite trails

This was primarily a test of a field flattener with an 80mm Apo triplet reflector and a Canon 4000D DSLR.

The scope with the field flattener and DSLR camera were mounted on a Celestron AVX mount.

AstroDMx Capture for Linux was used to capture at ISO 800, 107 x 20s exposures of M3 and the surrounding star field along with matching dark frames.

The images were dark frame corrected, registered and stacked in Siril and post processed in the Gimp 2.10.

M3 and surrounding star field.

Clicking on the image reveals that the stars are round to the edge of the field, so the use of the field flattener was a success.

However, increasingly, with the growth of megaconstellations of satellites, satellite trails can ruin images and certainly degrade the quality and information content of professional images. It is, however,  possible to stack the data in such a way that the satellite trails don't show up in the final image.

Animation showing the data stacked so that the satellite trails show and also stacked so that the satellite trails don't show.

M13 and M101

An Altair 60EDF doublet refractor fitted with a 0.8 x FR was used to image several galaxies and star clusters on the night of 27 May 2022. NINA was used to target and capture some 44 minutes of M101, and 20 minutes of M13 during a brief period of semi darkness. Images were stacked in DSS and processed in Adobe CS2.
