Eyepiece projection with a 130mm, f/5 Newtonian and lunar results with a cheap spotting scope

A Pentax K-x DSLR was fitted with an eyepiece projection adapter and a 15mm, wide angle lens and attached to a 130mm, f/5 Newtonian. Two overlapping images of the Moon were captured at ISO 100 and 1/20s exposure. A remote control was used to fire the shutter when all vibration had dampened down. The two images were combined into a single image. Click on the image to get a larger view:

An experiment was done with a 60mm 20x-60x zoom, spotting scope purchased from an Aldi store for £26-99.

Even a low cost device intended for nature study can yield results. Another project is to build an afocal rig to attach a DSLR for eyepiece projection or a digiscoping rig to fit the large diameter eyepiece.

A Fujifilm Finepix F450 compact camera was handheld to the eyepiece and a single image was captured:

AR1793 with a 120mm refractor

A DMK31AS camera was used with an 120mm ED refractor fitted with a Baadere solar filter. The camera was placed at prime focus and also with a 2.5x Barlow:

Lunar imaging with a DSLR and an f/5, 130mm Newtonian

It is not possible to place a DSLR at the prime focus of the f/5, 130mm Newtonian and bring it to focus. Eyepiece projection is one way of bringing the Moon to focus.

The eyepiece projection adapter:

18mm eyepiece fitted in the adapter:

The camera was set to capture a movie at 1200 x 700 resolution:

A 4000 frame AVI was captured

The AVI captured by the Pentax K-x cannot be processed by Registax. However, if it is loaded into Virtual Dub, an AVI can be saved out from Virtual Dub that can be processed by Registax.
The AVI was processed in Registax to produce the final image. Click on the image to get a larger view:

The Sun in white light using 1280 x 720 video with a DSLR

A Pentax K-x DSLR was placed at the prime focus of an f/10, 127mm Maksutov fitted with a photographic grade Baader solar filter. A 3432 frame AVI was captured at a resolution of 1280 x 720. The AVI was processed in Registax to produce the final image. Click on the image to get a larger view.

M13 with a 6" SCT and a starshoot camera

An Orion Starshoot colour camera was used with a wedge mounted 6", f/10 SCT to image M13. 20 x 40s light and dark frames were captured. The images were stacked in Deep Sky stacker:

A 59% full, waxing, gibbous Moon in the daytime sky

A handheld Pentax K-x DSLR, fitted with a 300mm lens was used to capture an image of the Moon in a slightly cloudy daylight sky:

Placed at the prime focus of an f/10, 127mm Maksutov, the DSLR was set to ISO100 and 1/50s. 10 RAW images were captured, resized and converted to TIFF files. The tiffs were stacked in Registax to produce the final image. Click on the image to get a larger view:

M57 with a 6" SCT

Twenty, 40s exposures using light and dark frames were captured of the Ring Nebula using an Orion Starshoot camera and a 6" SCT.  The images were stacked in Deep Sky Stacker (which used 19 of them) followed by post processing:

48% waxing, crescent Moon

A Pentax K-x DSLR was placed at the prime focus of an f/10, 127mm Maksutov on a driven equatorial mount. The camera was set to ISO100 and 0.3s exposure. The camera was focused in zoomed live mode and a single RAW image was captured. Click on the image to get a larger view:
