Martin Griffiths talked on Joseph Harris of Breconshire, Astronomer and Assay Master of the Mint in the 18th century.

This evening Martin Griffiths from The University of South Wales gave a spellbinding lecture on Joseph Harris of Breconshire, Blacksmith, Navigator, Astronomer and Assay Master of the Mint in the 18th century.

Fascinating lecture showing the works and life and even the descendants of this incredible man.

Very few sunspots

A static tripod mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ72 bridge camera at 60x optical zoom, fitted with a Baader solar filter, was used to image the Sun. The camera was set to burst mode, ISO-100 and 1/800s exposure at f/5.9. Images were captured in bursts of three. 60 images, precisely cropped in Nicola Mackin's AstroCrop software were stacked in Registax 5. Click on the image to get a larger view:

Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy)

Images of comet Lovejoy were captured using an Altair Wave 102mm and SX694 camera. I used 10x30 second subs through RGB filters. Calibrated and stacked in Maxim DL using the planetary option to stack on the comet. I then used the DDP filter to reduce the overexposure in the core of the comet.

Tail streamers are clearly visible

Jupiter Io shadow transit

Five AVIs of Jupiter were captured  with a Celestron 9.25 SCT AVX and a 2xBarlow, at 10fps, 1/25 sec using the Phillips SPC900NC webcam and processed in AutoStakkert!2 and Registax 6. The animation shows the progression of the transit:

Comet Lovejoy c/2014 Q2

A Pentax K-x DSLR fitted with a 500 mm mirror lens was set to ISO 12800 and mounted on a Merlin mount. 3 x 30s exposures were stacked in Deep Sky Stacker:

From the dark site at Llyn Llech Owain country park, the comet was just naked eye visible, but only with well dark adapted eyes, and then with difficulty. For imaging, the camera, fitted with a red-dot finder, was pointed at the barely visible comet.

Colin Elphic and Sandra Stewart both reported observing the comet in binoculars

A slight increase in Solar activity

A static tripod mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ72 bridge camera at 60x optical zoom, fitted with a Baader solar filter, was used to image the Sun. The camera was set to burst mode, ISO-100 and 1/800s exposure at f/5.9.
