M42/43 and the Running Man nebula

A composite image comprising some 6 hrs 41 mins total integration of RGB and Ha light taken over the period December 17th 2020 and February 10th 2022 with an Altair 60EDF refractor using two different cameras. The longer (4 mins) exposures were taken with an Atik320e OSC camera with and without a 0.8 x Focal Reducer and with and without an L-Enhance narrowband filter. The shorter exposures (1.4 to 4s) were taken with a ZWO ASI462MC camera. Data was captured as both FITS and TIFF formats in AstroDMx Capture and NINA, with post processing done in Astro Pixel Processor, Affinity Photo and Photoshop. The final composite image was made by merging both short and long exposures together in Photoshop and adjusting the opacity to allow more detail in the central area of M42 to show through from the shorter exposures. Further light stretching adjustments and colour balance were then applied in Photoshop, before finally saving the image as a png file.

Infrared Astronomy Zoom talk by Professor Matt Griffin

Professor Matt Griffin gave a fascinating talk to the Swansea Astronomical Society via Zoom on Infrared astronomy.

70.5% waxing, gibbous Moon with a Bridge camera

A Panasonic Lumix DMCFZ72, 60x optical zoom bridge camera fitted with a Baader solar filter, and mounted on a static tripod was used to capture 123 images of the Moon in bursts of 3. It took a total of 5 minutes to capture the data. The camera was set to f/5.9 and 1/1000th s exposure. The images were precisely cropped with Nicola's AstroCrop, and the best 111 stacked and wavelet processed  in Registax 6, post-processed in the Gimp 2.10 and Photoshop Elements.

The Sun in white light with a Bridge camera

A Panasonic Lumix DMCFZ72, 60x optical zoom bridge camera fitted with a Baader solar filter, and mounted on a static tripod was used to capture 129 images of the Sun in bursts of 3. It took a total of 4 minutes to capture the data. The camera was set to f/5.9 and 1/1000th s exposure. The images were precisely cropped with Nicola's AstroCrop and the best 116 were stacked and wavelet processed  in Registax 6, and post-processed in the Gimp 2.10.

The Orion and the Running man nebulae with a prototype SV405CC camera

First Light for the prototype SV405CC OSC set-point Cooled, 14 bit CMOS camera.

Nicola has implemented this prototype camera in AstroDMx Capture.

A  short window of opportunity between showers prompted the selection of quick setup equipment for the First Light field test of the SV405CC.

The SV405CC was placed at the focus of a 66mm, f/5.9, APO, ED doublet refractor mounted on an iOptron Cube Pro AZ GOTO mount.

Equipment used

AstroDMx Capture for Windows was used to capture 48 x 20s exposures with matching dark frames.

Screenshot of AstroDMx Capture for Windows capturing 20s FITS files of the Orion nebula

The images were calibrated and stacked in Deep Sky Stacker and separately in Affinty Photo. The resulting images were combined in Picture Window Pro, post processed in the Gimp and Fitswork and cropped to show the Orion nebula and the Running man nebula.

Another processing of the same data

The prototype camera showed good potential at First Light. However, it remains to be seen if the manufacturer SVBONY will stick with the SONY IMX294 or switch to a different format Sensor, the IMX533... Interesting times!

The Moon a comet and deep sky

HERE ARE SOME IMAGES TAKEN LAST NIGHT WITH NIKON D3500 THROUGH A 20CM SCT F6.3  15-30 SECOND EXP. THE COMET IS ATLAS FOUND JUST NORTH OF STAR EPSILON GEMINI, IT IS NOT VERY BRIGHT BUT FAIRLY EASILY VISIBLE VISUALLY.

Flame and Horsehead nebula

Flame and Horsehead nebulae:

51 mins and 45 mins of RGB data were taken on the 27th and 29th Jan respectively, using AstroDMx Capture and NINA using an Atik 320e OSC camera fitted with a 0.8 x FR connected to an Altair 60EDF refractor. These data were combined with 86 mins of Ha data calibrated with flat field and bias frames taken in NINA on the 4th Feb 2022 with the same equipment, but with the camera fitted with an Optolong L-Enhance filter. The Ha and RGB data were combined in APP and post processed in Affinity Photo and Photoshop 2022 to produce a 182 min total integration.

Leo Triplet:

70 mins of RGB data and associated dark frames were taken in AstroDMx Capture with a Sony A77 on 10th Feb 20221 using an Altair 60EDF refractor. These data were combined with 44 mins of Ha data calibrated with associated flats and biases taken using NINA on the 4th Feb 22 with a OSC Atik 320e camera fitted with a 0.8 x FR and an L-Enhance filter using the same scope. The data were combined in APP and post processed in Affinity Photo and Photoshop 2022 to produce a 114min total integration showing M65, M66 and the Hamburger galaxies.
