Happy New Year 2020 everyone!
In our first meeting of the new decade, Nik Whitehead of UWTSD gave us a talk on "What's that planet doing there? A brief introduction to planetary formation"
Nik told us some of the theories of planetary formation that have been favoured back in history, and how they changed over the years as more observations became available. Now, observations of exoplanets in other solar systems are informing our theories - Jupiter and Saturn would normally be much closer to the sun, for example, but they have gravitational resonance with each other that keeps them in their current orbitary positions.
Thank you very much Nik for coming to talk to us, and thank you for the demo using the soft toy planets (from http://www.celestialbuddies.com) Here is Nik with Jupiter and Saturn! :
